PACC questions and answers

  1. Why is it important to apply ‘PACC’ when communicating in different social situation?
  2. If a majority of your classmates hold a certain view about a controversial topic, while you hold an opposing view, how would you convey your thoughts politely?
  3. What are the possible repercussions if the tone and register were used wrongly.

  1. We need to speak in a different tone and register depending on the audience, context and purpose.
EG: If we are talking to the principal, we cannot talk to him like we would to our friends.

  1. I would say my thoughts about it when they ask for suggestions, and ask if they agree with it. If they do not, we can always compromise and come up with a solution.

  1. We may interpret the wrong message as if we are being rude or not serious. (during a serious matter)

EG: Talking to the principal in a rude manner as if you are talking to your friends

  1. It is important to apply PACC because the register (formal or informal) will depend on the audience. Tone depends purpose and context. So, we will not be able to communicate effectively.

If i oppose a certain view then i must let the class know in a polite manner. The register needs to be formal and tone should be polite, respectful and not offending or demeaning. For content, phrases like ‘I beg to differ’ , ‘In my humble opinion’, etc. can be used.

    3) If tone and register are used wrongly, the end result of the discussion will be bad. We need to keep in mind that even though we hold a different opinion, we need to be polite and yet firm. We cannot hurt or demean others, in this case our friends. This in turn will damage relationships.
